The Malta Tourism Society
THE SOCJETA TURISTIKA MALTIJA (MALTA TOURISM SOCIETY)

The Socjeta Turistika Maltija (Malta Tourism Society) was set up just over a year ago (May 2002) by a number of individuals coming from various fields related to tourism, hotel management, planning and marketing.

The Society's main objective is to provide a forum for professionals working in, studying or otherwise interested in tourism across all its sectors and to help improve and upgrade the Maltese and Regional tourism services and professionalism in the development of the sector. In contrast to other tourism associations, the Society aims to attract members from a diversity of sectors since the Society believes that to improve the tourism sector a forum whereby all stakeholders meet and discuss relevant issues is important.

The Society through its various events aims to bring together people from various fields of tourism to share experiences and to understand other facets of this complex activity other than their own so as to provide a basis for mutual understanding which would ultimately lead to a more concerted and co-ordinated approach to the development of tourism in the Maltese Islands.

Membership to the Socjeta Turistika Maltija is
Lm 20 annually. This entitles members to attend free of charge most of the seminars organized by the Society. In the near future a newsletter will be issued to keep members abreast of recent developments in this sector both locally and internationally.

This is only some brief information about the Society. Should you wish to know more or become a member please approach a member of the Committee.

Tourism Foresight - St. James Cavalier Centre For Creativity 13th June 2003
Over the last two year all of us have experienced the vulnerability of the tourism industry in producing the economic benefits we may have hoped for in our annual forecasts – yet, we speak of product development; we mention the issue of our main value propositions – but season after season and year after year we wallow , rather precariously, in this lull of delirious bliss – dreaming of a better tomorrow…but that tomorrow cannot ever become a reality if we do not give a firm commitment to change things here and now….. not tomorrow…not after this summer season…here and now ….today, this is the sort of commitment we should have made last year and the year before last…..why are we not capitalizing on our heritage in a more interactive and lively way? Why do we continue to sell itineraries for tourists which have remained unchanged for the past seventy years, at least?
Perhaps, I had better explain what I meant by Capitalizing…I do not mean we continue to ruin our traditional skylines and change our characteristics…but I do mean we should use these as the principal tools for developing an interesting tourist destination based on Product Malta rather than Product Med!
